I think one of the powers that a university has is it's 'stamp of approval'. they have invested so much effort into developing a curriculum that at the end of the day an employer can hire someone knowing that they are of a certain level. ( more or less obviously taking into a few other elements too)
one of the many problems with this article is it doesn't deal with how employers will know who has acquired these skills. at the end of the day, majority of people invest so much into studying so that they can get a job or pursue a certain career. Even though the article mentions that courses can be judged by the amount of people the subscribe to a course, i don't believe this necessarily means it is a good course. who ever said that following the masses ensures it's the right direction?
Probably the biggest problem with education today is the tuition fees, and although the author seemingly has found the solution, he doesn't provide it. all that is mentioned is ' students will enrol at their "primary" university, which would handle the disbursement of their tuition fees..." this solution just isn't a solution. it is a much more complicated process.
so although there are ideas which i think are great and need to be implemented into the education system, i don't believe that the same power that flipped the music/ movie/ press industry on it's head, has enough power to overturn the colossal university system.

tuvya, maybe whats impossible to implement today will become the obvious reality in recent future.
About the tuition fee, if you count out a few private schools in USA, i think for most of the universities in the world tuition fee is a very minor component of their budget. For eg. in IIT-India, the cost for each student to the institute is around 25-30K usd for one year, but they charge less than 1K from each student. And anyways look at the model in which some european union sponsored Phd's are done. The person does it from various universities instead of sitting around in one university and learning from one bunch of geniuses. Its very effective there already why not in lower strata of education?
I agree with you on almost all the points but one, when you say:

it is not really true and you can see by many examples of the text, internet will slowly take over and i think that to avoid this process the universities have to change in a certain way, if not they could or will become "relics". I don't think such a big change is needed but a few are. For me one of the main changes is to adapt themselves to our century and our "new" ways of thinking and this is for me Key element.
